Florida Republican Rep. Connie Mack is scheduled to make a major announcement Friday, suggesting that -- as widely expected -- he's entering the U.S. Senate race.
A press release described the event as a "major announcement regarding the 2012 race for the United States Senate in Florida against liberal incumbent Senator Bill Nelson."
Mack has long been positioning himself for a Senate run, which would mean following in the footsteps of his father, former Sen. Connie Mack III, and has taken many steps that signal his preparations for a statewide campaign.
Last month, , and he's been making the speaking rounds -- including an appearance at this year's Conservative Political Action Conference, a staging ground for candidates.
As of Thursday, Mack'sdisplayed a campaign-like video linking Nelson to President Obama. The ad, paid for by Mack's campaign committee, slams Nelson as a liberal. It was released earlier this month and timed to coincide with a visit the president made to fundraise for Nelson.
